Robert "Bob" Mathews' Obituary
Robert “Bob” Mathews, 57, of Thurmont, MD, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with liver cancer.
Born on February 23, 1968, in Waynesboro, PA, Bob was the son of Rosemarie Garland and the late Robert E. Mathews. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Bernie Garland, and his grandparents, Robert Bert and Cynthia Mathews, and Albert Chester and Dorothy Mae Gouchenour.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Renee Lynn (Despeaux); his daughters, Carrie Mathews (Nick Myers) of Thurmont and Kayla Ward (Brandon) of Westminster, MD; and five grandchildren: Courtney, Camden, Declan, Kinley, and Maverick. He is also survived by his brothers, Aaron and Michael; and by a loving family of nieces, nephews, and in-laws who will miss him dearly.
Bob dedicated 36 years of service to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where he worked as a maintenance mechanic supervisor before retiring in 2024. Outside of work, he enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, and relaxing at the beach. Bob had a great sense of humor and a gift for making others laugh. Most of all, he treasured time with his family—especially his grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all who offered their love, support, and kindness during this difficult time. Your comforting words, thoughtful gestures, and presence have meant more than words can express. We are especially grateful to our many friends, family, and coworkers who stood by us and helped to honor the memory of Bob and helped to take care of him.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at Resthaven Funeral Home, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick, MD, 21701 on Monday, July 7: Visitation 11am-12pm, Service 12pm-1pm, followed by interment at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, and a reception after the internment. The family kindly requests that attire be casual, beach-inspired, or brightly colored in joyful celebration of Bob’s life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at https://helphopelive.org/campaign/22533 in support of Bob’s grandson, Maverick, who is battling a rare genetic disease.
