Hugh L. Smith III's Obituary
Hugh Llewellyn Smith III passed away surrounded by his family. He was born on September 27, 1954, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Hugh Llewellyn Smith Jr. and Jean Simmons.
During his childhood, Hugh’s family moved from Massachusetts to Miami, Florida, and later settled in Clearwater, Florida. He graduated from Clearwater High School and went on to earn his degree from the University of South Florida.
Hugh moved to Maryland to begin what became a long and dedicated career as a cartographer with the Defense Mapping Agency, now known as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). He took great pride in his work and retired after 30 years of service.
On May 14, 1994, Hugh married the love of his life, Heather MacAlister. Together they welcomed two children, Hugh Llewellyn Smith IV and Hailey Rocio Elizabeth Smith, who were the joy of his life.
An avid lover of nature, Hugh found peace in hiking, camping, and kayaking. He especially enjoyed long walks in the woods with his family, friends, and his beloved dogs. Hugh also had a passion for travel. For their 30th wedding anniversary, he and Heather took a memorable cruise to Norway and Iceland—a journey Hugh described as the most spectacular scenery he had ever seen.
Hugh was predeceased by his parents, Hugh Jr. and Jean. He is survived by his devoted wife, Heather; his son Hugh IV, daughter‑in‑law Trina, and granddaughter Aria; and his daughter Hailey. He is also survived by his sister Debbie and her husband Dave, nephew David, and great‑nephew Carter of Palm Harbor, Florida; as well as his brothers‑ and sisters‑in‑law, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 17, at 2:00 p.m. at Neelsville Presbyterian Church, 20701 Frederick Road, Germantown, MD 20876, where Hugh was a faithful follower of Christ and a longtime member.
