I'm Hugh's cousin Scotty. Jeannie and I will forever miss Hugh's fun and positive spirit. I'm so glad we got to visit several times in the past few years. Our mutual cousins the Simmons famously had their cottage here on Cape Cod in North Eastham where we spent many a summer vacation with Unky Gus, Liz, Leslie and Sam. More recently, Hugh stayed with us at our home here in Sandwich. He loved the beach and the surf. We would always have a great seafood feast when he visited ... lobsters and steamers. We got him hooked on sea kayaking.
We in the family always called him "Brer". I always thought the name came from Brer Rabbit, a character in American folklore. Later I found out it was from his sister Debbie trying to pronounce "brother" when they were very young. Interestingly enough, Brer Rabbit is actually a shortening of "Brother Rabbit" so I guess both things can be true at the same time.
Wishing Debbie, Heather, Hugh Jr, Hailey and their families and friends strength and courage. May fond memories bring you comfort through these difficult times.
Rest in peace dear Cousin Brer.
