I met Howard after hiring on at WJ in 1983. He knew what worked, and more importantly what didn't and he freely shared this valuable knowledge. I quickly appreciated his sense of humor, insight and his wide range of interests and we became friends at the job and off.
As is often the case we eventually moved to other employers. Fortunately Howard and Evelyn lived close by so there were pizza and beer evenings to watch the Washington Nats. Long conversations about interesting subjects. Remenincing about times gone by in the D.C. area. Swapping books, CDs, DVDs on subjects of mutual interest. Refining the latest beer recipes at The Flying Barrel.
As time passed we became closer friends. Older men. Grateful for 40 years of friendship.
Then one Saturday Heaven got an upgrade. The heart is heavy with grief but the good years make the glass more than half-full. And when we get to see each other again we will fill those glasses as we used to. With the latest recipes we brew up. And drain them again. Just like we used to do.
Godspeed Howard. Godspeed.
