Mr. George William Bennett Sr.'s Obituary
George William Bennett, Sr., of Buckingham’s Choice, Adamstown and formerly of Mt. Airy, MD passed away quietly on August 21, 2024, at Buckingham’s Choice Retirement Community. He was 92.
George was born on 22 June 1932 in Nemacolin, PA to Alexander Erskine Bennett and Ethel Jane Bennett (nee Shank). He was the eighth of ten children. Following high school, enlisted in the US Army in 1952, spending 16 months in Korea assigned to the 330th Communications Reconnaissance Company as a Morse code operator and radio technician. He left Army service in 1955, accepting a job with the National Security Agency. Over the course of his NSA career, he worked on various systems installations and technical assignments before retiring in 1987.
George met his wife, Shirley, at a New Year’s Eve skating party in Canonsburg, PA. They were married on 19 December 1954 and raised three children, George William, Jr., Lorraine Lynn, and Ethel Ann. Over the course of the next 18 years, the family lived in Germany, Japan, and England. When not overseas, they resided in New Carrollton, MD, later moving and living in Mt. Airy, MD for many years. Summer vacations were spent at a family cabin in PA and at Bennett Family beach reunions with many of his nine siblings and their families.
Known for his quick wit and enjoyable sense of humor, George was a pleasure to be around. As a father and grandfather, he was the best anyone could ask for…loving, patient, funny, and a great mentor and role model.
George is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Shirley Mae Bennett (nee Meyers), daughter-in-law Pamela (Durkee) Bennett, son-in-law Maurice L. Williams, Jr. and eight of his siblings. He is survived by son George William Bennett, Jr of Annapolis, MD, daughter Lorraine Lynn Moxley and husband Mark of Mt.
