Mrs. Dorothy Clark Genau's Obituary
Dorothy Clark Genau, 88, of Frederick and formerly Potomac, passed away on December 10, 2023 with her loving children present. Dorothy (Dottie) was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.
Dottie is survived by her five children and their spouses; Frederick Squires Genau, Jr. (Kim), Marjorie Genau Gioia (Gerry), Michael Clark Genau (Sandi), Robert Maxwell Genau (Lynne), and Cynthia Genau Urgo (Don); 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Frederick Squires Genau Sr.; sister, Gwendolyn McCormick; and daughter, Mary Gwendolyn Genau.
Born on April 13, 1935 in Washington, DC, Dottie was the daughter of the late Robert S. and Marjorie M. Clark. She grew up in Arlington, VA and attended Washington and Lee High School. She then went on to graduate from Washington School for Secretaries, and got her first job at Riggs National Bank. It was there where she met the love of her life, Fred.
Dottie and Fred were married in 1955 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Washington, DC., and created a home for their children within the Montgomery Square community in Potomac, MD. Dottie stayed at home to take care of their children, which was what meant most to her. She was also an active member of the Catholic Church, singing as an alto in the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church Choir and serving on the Altar Society Committee. As their kids grew older, she returned to work for Montgomery County Public Schools. Upon retirement in 1995, Dottie and Fred moved to Frederick and were very involved members of Katharine Drexel Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteered in the Parish Office.
Dottie engaged in many activities for which she had a genuine passion – bowling for a weekly league, crocheting blankets for her children, playing cards with friends; and doing Sudoku, jigsaw, and crossword puzzles. She attended Washington Redskin Football games with Fred, as well as her children’s –and later her grandkids – games and musical events.
Dottie’s legacy of kindness will live on through her family and friends who remember her dearly.
Visitation will take place from 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM on Friday, December 15th at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 8428 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Entombment will follow in the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of Dorothy Clark Genau to the Alzheimer’s Association- www.alz.org, or to St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church. The family also encourages you to please sign the online guestbook at www.resthaven.us .
