Mr. D'Arcy Lester McGreer's Obituary
D’Arcy Lester McGreer, US Army Veteran, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October
15, 2024 in Frederick, MD at the age of 75. He was born at Walter Reed Army Medical
Center in Washington D.C. on January 19, 1949.
Mr. McGreer is preceded by his sister, Kathleen Edith McGreer Moynihan (her son William,)
father, USAF Colonel Wharton Lester McGreer and mother, professional opera singer
Donna Jean McKinley McGreer.
His father's military career moved the family to Texas where two siblings were born,
Christopher and Donnella. His father was then assigned to Germany where Timothy was
born. The family's next duty station was New York where Kathleen was born. The family’s
final move was to Fairfax, Virginia.
D’Arcy graduated from Fairfax High School in 1967. He achieved the Boy Scout rank of Life
Scout, was a member of the Debate Team and played Varsity Baseball. He graduated from
George Mason University in 1971 with a BA in Psychology and played Varsity Soccer. He
joined the Army in 1971 and was assigned to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
During this time, he earned an MA degree in Psychology from Catholic University. D’Arcy
served in the Army for 21 years in active, Reserve, and National Guard units. He followed
his father into Toastmasters International in the mid 70’s. His Christian faith drove much of
his education choices, career direction, family life and personal life.
Following his marriage in 1978 to Nancy Cooper of McLean at their home church of Truro
Episcopal Church in Fairfax, VA they moved to Monterey, CA for a year of active duty at the
Defense Language Institute.
D’Arcy graduated from Westminster Theological Seminary, Pennsylvania and obtained a
Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Counseling, followed by service in a counseling
position in New Jersey. He and Nancy had three sons, Robin, Conrad, & Quentin and two
daughters Julianna, Larissa. During this time, he was an avid beekeeper.
Once back in Virginia, Mr. McGreer became an avid advocate of fathers’ parental rights in
divorced families. He wrote much on the subject of divorce and considered it to be his
passion project.
Mr. McGreer led a full life and had plans for more adventure. After retiring from Georgetown
University, including service as Union representative, Mr. McGreer lived the RV dream
traveling near and far, meeting and making many friends along the way. He enjoyed all
conversations of substance as debating any given topic was second nature to him. His
passion for relaying knowledge led him to fully enjoy communicating and sharing all he
learned throughout his life.
He is survived by his siblings Chris, Donnella, Tim and their spouses, his children Robin,
Julianna & husband Jason, Larissa, Conrad & wife Julia, and Quentin & wife Mariana; his
former wife Nancy Lee Cooper McGreer; as well as many nieces, nephews, and
great-nieces and nephews.
D’Arcy’s life was especially blessed by his eight grandchildren: Boaz, Henrik, Phoebe,
Marshall, Melina, Teagen, Maddox, and Hailey.
He will be laid to rest on Dec. 3rd, 2024, in National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico following the service at Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel.
