Our Story
We've learned a lot about caring for families over the years. We realize that we aren't just caring for a loved one, but the entire family. People come to us during their most difficult times, and we respond with kindness, understanding and expertise. Our goal is to make everyone feel at home as we work with them to create a memorable service in honor of a beautiful life.

1961
Resthaven was established in 1961 as the first multi-faith, non-sectarian cemetery serving Frederick and Montgomery counties. At that time, Resthaven encompassed a little more than 25 acres.

1971
In 1971, noting the great liability to Maryland's taxpayers for veterans' cemeteries, Resthaven created our first veterans garden, the Veterans Garden of Honor. This garden was personally dedicated by the former secretary of the Navy, the Honorable J. William Middendorf III. In the center is a unique and beautiful sculpture of the legendary Phoenix, a legendary symbol of eternal life.

1974
Resthaven Memorial Gardens introduced the Petland garden in 1974, after many of our property owners expressed dismay that there were no satisfactory options concerning final arrangements for their pets.

1976
Resthaven began construction on its first Outdoor Mausoleum in 1976. Rainbow Granite, known for its elaborate colors, was chosen for this beautiful structure. This exclusive granite is so desirable that it is rarely used in such structures today. The Garden Mausoleum features a courtyard setting in the center, which is under shelter, and is often used for committal and memorial services.

1986
Resthaven was also the first in our area to offer onsite cremation in 1986. As cremation became more requested amongst families we served, we added our pet crematory as well.

2000
In 2000 Resthaven completed the construction of central Maryland’s most elaborate Indoor Chapel Mausoleum. Built with marble hand picked from Carrerra Italy, and featuring exclusive works from famous local artists, our chapel provides a beautiful, climate controlled sanctuary for visitation and reflection.

2001
Resthaven Funeral Services began in 2001 with the mission of providing unique and affordable services for persons of all faiths, using any cemetery, as well as secular life celebrations and ceremonies with Military honors.
