Mr. Woody James, 98, of Walkersville and formerly of Three Rivers, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2020 at Sunrise Senior Living in Frederick.
Woody James was born to the late Matthew James and Charity Duff on December 21, 1921 in Brent, Alabama. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers, 3 sisters and 1 great-grandson. He was married to Clara Mae James, who preceded him in death on December 3, 2017.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Daughters – Barbara Daniel (Samuel) and Joan James-Barber (Dale); Grandsons – Gerald Jones (Joy), Patrick Daniel (Heather), Dale Barber II (Melanie), and Edward Lewis-Street; Granddaughters – Patricia Harris (Jasper) and LaKisa Ingram (Spinada); 13 Great-Grandchildren and 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews.
Woody served in the United States Army during WWII in the 24th Infantry Regiment, from October 26, 1944 to October 24, 1946. He received an Honorable Discharge as a Technician 4th Grade. During his service, he received the following awards: Army of Occupation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He was a dedicated employee with the Michigan State Highway Department, starting on January 27, 1960 until his retirement on January 14, 1984. He loved the outdoors and working in his garage. He was known in the community as the “Neighborhood Handyman”. His favorite pastime was stripping copper from old appliances and selling it for a small profit. He also loved helping family and people.
A private graveside service will be held in the Veterans Garden of Honor at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick on Monday, March 30, 2020.
