William Bill Floria's Obituary
William “Bill” Floria, 86, of Frederick, Maryland went to be with our Lord on November 10, 2025.
He was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Hyattsville, MD where he attended Archbishop John Carroll High School and proudly served as the football team’s quarterback. He later earned his undergraduate degree from Wheeling University and a master’s degree from Duke University. His professional journey began as an English teacher at Gaithersburg High School before transitioning into financial services, where he worked to improve retirement benefit options for educators nationwide. This pivotal move led to a lifelong career in business and finance. Throughout his life, he maintained a deep compassion for the underdog and those in need—a value that shaped many of his actions and decisions.
Bill was known by all for his love of family, conversation, humor, and competition. He loved Washington Redskins football, holding seasons tickets for more than 40 years, and Duke Basketball. He enjoyed weekends playing golf with the men in his family and a few select friends, and he said, “the game always beat me, but I had fun.” He was devout in his faith, and was a parishioner at St. Mary’s in Barnesville, MD, St. John the Evangelist and St. Katharine Drexel Catholic churches in Frederick, Maryland for many years. His favorite pastime was having meaningful and philosophical conversations with people, learning about their beliefs and experiences and sharing his own. He loved good food and sharing meals with people, which he did for many years as the owner of The Province Restaurant. In those days, he could be found daily at “his table,” in the back corner of the front room at the restaurant, joined by colleagues, family, or friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy, of 64 years, whom he started dating when he was 16 years old, son William Edward Floria Jr, daughters Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Troxell, Marisa Probert, and Angela Weir; son-in-laws Carl Probert, Jr, Christopher Weir, and Daniel Troxell; grandchildren Joseph Probert and his wife Libby, Michael Probert and his wife Charlotte, Stephen Probert and his wife Alyssa, Brennan Gmeiner and his wife Kathy, Eliana Phillips and her husband Troy, Artur Troxell and Maria Troxell, Kenneth Floria and his wife Taylor, Anthony Floria, Maxfield Weir, Samuel Weir and Benjamin Weir; great-grandchildren Millie, Oliver, Penelope and Callum Probert, Rosalie, Ava, Jacob and Christian Gmeiner, Evelyn and Isaac Floria, and Emilia and Adeline Phillips. He is also survived by his brother Joseph Floria (wife Patricia) and sister Eileen Michele “Shelley” Smith (husband Frank) and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and beloved close friends.
