Obituary
Verna Ellen Withrow, 86, of Jessup, MD passed away on November 24, 2017 after a brief illness. She was the loving wife of Don Withrow for 68 years. She was born December 5, 1930 in Shreveport, LA to the late Milton L. and America Ellen Leslie. Known affectionately as Mom and Mamaw to her family, Verna grew up in Louisiana, graduating from Byrd High School with the class of 1947. Soon after graduating, she spent several years working as a retail buyer for Palais Royal department stores before becoming a full-time homemaker and Mom to her three children. The family eventually moved to a small farm in Frederick, where Verna spent many happy years caring for her children and grandchildren as well as an assortment of animals. She especially loved horses as well as many cats and dogs. Verna and Don later retired to Annapolis, MD and St. Augustine, FL, eventually returning to Maryland in late 2013, to settle in Jessup with family members. Always a nurturing and affectionate wife, mother and grandmother, Verna will be remembered always for her warmth, sense of humor and devotion to her family and friends. In addition to her husband she is survived by her son; Curtis Withrow and wife Tina, daughters; Mitzi Withrow and Marla Hirth and husband Jim, niece; Velta Ellen Ethridge, and grandchildren; Ryan Withrow (fiancAC. Jennifer Davis), Catherine Mauldin (David), Karla Houldsworth (Kenneth), James Casey Withrow and Patrick Withrow, as well as eight great-grandchildren to cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by seven half-siblings. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2nd at noon at the Historical Chapel at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick.
