Susan Christine Rice's Obituary
Susan Christine Rice, 69, of Walkersville, died Sunday, December 4, 2022, at United Hospital in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Susan was the eldest of five children born to Avé M. and Claude Parnell. Born April 23, 1953 in Washington D.C., Susan raised her family in Poolesville and Walkersville. Susan was a devoted mother and stepmother to six children, whose steadfast love and support will be dearly missed. Susan graduated from the Prince George's County Police Academy in May, 1985, and served with the Maryland National Capital Park Police for several years. In June, 1997, Susan graduated from the Western Maryland Police Training Academy and served with the Hagerstown Police Department and was a founding member of the Street Crimes Unit. She loved her work as a police officer almost as much as she loved being a mother and grandmother. Susan traveled extensively across the U.S. and also enjoyed international trips to Canada, Iceland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Greece and France. She was a prolific reader and often visited the libraries in Walkersville and Thurmont.
Susan was the beloved mother of Michael W. Stream, Jr., (Shannon), Suzanne M. Butler (Albert), Mary C. Turska (Jake), and devoted step-mother to Brendan T. Rice (Carey), James A. Rice, and Ann E. Schofield (Joseph); loving sister to Cathy Hunter (Robert), Claudia Parnell, Steven Parnell (Natalie), and Karen Parnell; and the absolute best grandmother to Emma, Evan, Everly, Ella, Ashley, Aaron, Sean, Daniel and Emily. She will be sorely missed by friend and companion Doug Grove. Also missing her will be nephews Bobby, Chance, Sean, Austin and Garrett; her cats Abbie, Allie and Annie; grand-cats Dora, Chewy, Joey Pepperoni, Chloe and Beep Beep; and grand-dogs Max, Jack, Stella, Jameson, Noodles, Theo and Richard.
She was predeceased by her loving husband James B. Rice, parents Avé M. and Claude Parnell, grandson Reed A. Cantler and granddaughter Sophia M. Rice.
