Obituary
Steven Allen Lutz, Ph.D., of Frederick, passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2015 after a seven-year battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Myrsonia Lutz, his wife of nine years. Born May 28, 1953 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Donald and Lilliana Lutz. In addition to his loving wife, Steven is survived by his brother, Dr. Richard Lutz and his wife Mary of Austin, Texas, and their children, Lilliana, Harrison and Isabella. Also surviving are cousins Carolyn and Robert Abey of Baltimore, Maryland; Dr. Robert and Sheila Goebel, and Linda Reynolds. He also leaves behind many dear and special friends, colleagues and his church family. Steven attended Harrisburg Area Community College where he earned an Associate's degree, and then received his Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering, as well as his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences from West Virginia University in Morgantown, Maryland. In his early years he was a proud Eagle Scout, and he was an avid bicycle racing enthusiast and member of the U.S. Cycling Federation. For the past 30 years, he worked at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland where he was the Aerothernal/Aero-Optical Lead and Principal Engineer and will be remembered as a dedicated, brilliant and insightful scientist with high integrity, and a ready willingness to help. Steven's life was centered around his faith in Jesus Christ, and he was a dedicated member and lay leader at Church of the Redeemer in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He served there as a Head Usher, faithfully leading a team of ushers and greeters for many years. Visitation will take place from 11:00 AM to 12 Noon on Thursday, January 15th at the Church of the Redeemer, 19425 Woodfield Road in Gaithersburg, where a funeral service will begin at 12 Noon. Interment will immediately follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick, Maryland. Funeral repast information will be available at the service.
