Obituary
SSGT Randolph W. "Randy" Butler, USMC, USAF, Ret., of Burkittsville, passed away on December 23, 2016 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Madeleine Butler, his wife of 54 years. Born in Knoxville, Maryland, Randolph was the son of the late George W. and Acheir Holland-Butler. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18. He served his country for 23 years on active duty and another 20 years in Civil Service. The motto "Once a Marine, always a Marine" described him to a T. He earned the respect of his superiors and co-workers by going above and beyond the call of duty. Transportation was his area of expertise. Randy ran a "tight ship" and made sure that his vehicles were always in top shape, refueled and ready to go. At Ft. Detrick, he volunteered for the base chapel and drove for the MWR Services. While serving in France under NATO, Randy learned to communicate effectively with the vehicle operators from seven nations assigned to him. Randy was the recipient of many awards, medals, commendation letters and certificates. To name a few: USMC Good Conduct (1st & 2nd Awards), National Defense Service Medal W/ Bronze Star, Bronze Medal for Outstanding Marksmanship, USAF Good Conduct Medal w/ 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, USAF Commendation Medal w/ 2OLC, Presidential Unit Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct National Defense Medal w/ Bronze Star, Dept. of the Army Exceptional Performance. Randy was honored to be a model for the Thurgood Marshall statue created by sculptor Toby Mendez, located in Annapolis. Randy was also fortunate to have the support of his family so he could stay focused on the mission. SSGT Butler is survived by six children, Gary Scott (Dorothy), Leslie Del Rosario (Hil), Carl Butler, Kathy Butler, Lorraine Slater (Robert), and Annette Butler; grandchildren: William DeMar (Sheron), Melissa Johnson (Raphael), Rochell Scott (Mike), and Jonathan Slater; great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.
