Robert M. Wheeler's Obituary
Middletown, Maryland – Robert Martin Wheeler, 83, passed away on November 2, 2023 after a period of declining health.
Rob was born in Manchester, NH on November 22, 1939 to Norwin and Lois (Rivers) Wheeler. After living in Georgia, Florida, and Alaska, the family relocated back to Manchester, NH where Rob graduated from Manchester West High School. From there, Rob attended the University of Florida before entering the United States Air Force where he specialized in communications. After eight years with the USAF, Rob began a 40-year career with IBM working in New Haven, CT; Waltham, MA; Bedford, NH; and finally, Gaithersburg, MD.
Rob enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, a good poker game, travel, all-you-can eat crab dinners, and getting the last morsel of meat out of a New England lobster. Prior to Google Maps and Waze, Rob was the one you depended upon to provide directions to anywhere ensuring the avoidance of construction, traffic, potholes and speed traps, as well as sharing all of the sights to see along the way. Rob closely followed the Washington Commanders, Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles, and couldn’t deny his New England roots by cheering on the New England Patriots (at least during their 20-year dynasty).
Rob was predeceased by his parents and loyal canines, Marty and Lofty. He is survived by his loving wife Terry (Marsh). He leaves four children: Karyn (Dan) O’Neil of Manchester, NH; Daniel (Carol Ann) Wheeler of Marshfield, MA; Kenton (Beth) Wheeler of Plymouth, NH; and Donna Molony of Hooksett, NH. He also leaves behind his step-daughter Michelle (James) Garey of Montgomery, MD and step-son Anthony (Kelly) King of Urbana, MD. Rob leaves behind fourteen grandchildren: Ashley, Ryan (and his fiancé Jamie), Matt, Katie, Kelly, Sam, Bryce, Johnathan, Isabell, Chase, Sasha, Quintin, Sophie and Daniel; and five great grandchildren: Aiden, MacKenzie, Skyler, Teagan and Caydence. Rob is also survived by his sister Muriel Leigh (William) Hinkley of Centerville, OH.
The family would like to thank Rob’s caretakers from Amada Senior Care for their constant and loving comfort and support provided to Rob and his family over the course of the last year.
Visitation will take place on Monday, November 13, 2023, from 11:30am-1:30pm with a service immediately following at Resthaven Funeral Home & Community Center, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Hwy, Frederick, MD 02701 and burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elks National Foundation at www.elks.org/enf or 2750 N. Lakeview Ave. Chicago, IL 60614-2256.
