Mr. Ralph Edson Cate, Sr., 87, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away on January 10, 2018 at Clary Grove Nursing Home in Martinsburg. He was the devoted husband of the late Martha Stanton Cate, who died December 5, 2017. Born in Washington, DC, Ralph was the son of the late Julian S. and Anna J. Cate. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and earned his bachelor's degree in English from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. He worked as a proof reader in the banking industry until his retirement in 1997. He was also an avid bridge player. In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Cate was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven Flanary, and a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Cate. He is survived by six children, Sue Packer (Thomas Loraw), Ann Vogt, Vickie Littrell (Buck), Deborah Cavanagh (Edward), Linda Overstreet, and Ralph E. Cate, Jr. (Alicia); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other relatives. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 20th in the Garden of Memory at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N in Frederick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org).
