Philip Raymond Clark Jr's Obituary
Philip R. Clark, Jr., age 69 of Frederick, Maryland, formerly of Washington, DC, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at his home after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Phil was born in Oak Ridge, TN, on July 23, 1954, to Philip R. Clark, Sr., and Jeanne Cushing Clark. He was a devoted husband to Li Li Zhang and a cherished stepfather to Yu Xin Zhuang and Shi Hao Zhuang.
Phil grew up in Chillum, MD, and Washington, DC, attended Gonzaga College High School, and graduated from Hood College. He loved sports, especially tennis. For 16 years, Phil served as a weekend manager at the Potomac Tennis & Fitness Club, where he frequently stepped in as a Sunday morning playing partner for members, some of whom were Washington’s biggest movers and shakers. Phil touched many people through his works and interests, especially in his work with disabled children at the Mansfield Training School in Storrs, CT. He loved nature and animals and walking through Rock Creek Park in DC.
Phil is survived by his wife, stepson Shi Hao Zhuang, stepdaughter Yu Xin Zhuang; his mother Jeanne C. Clark; and siblings Margaret Gatti, Andrew Clark (Cindy Roberts), Mary Clark, Michael Clark (Cheryl), Jeanne Clark (Stephen “Bo” Smolka), Robert Clark (Lorena Palagonia); and nieces and nephews Benjamin Shaffer (Lindsey Yanosick) and their daughter Lily; Nancy, Daniel and Elizabeth Clark; Matthew and Katherine Smolka; and Diego and Carolina Clark. He is predeceased by his father Philip R. Clark, Sr.; his brother-in-law Richard Gatti, and his nephew Christopher Smolka. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation to pay respects and offer condolences will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 9501B Catoctin Mountain Hwy, Frederick, MD 21701. The visitation hours are scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Funeral services will begin at 12 noon on Oct. 14, with interment to follow immediately in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Washington Tennis & Education Foundation (www.wtef.org) or a charity of your choice in Phil’s memory.
His legacy of kindness, love, and dedication to his family and community will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Philip Raymond Clark Jr. will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
