Dr. Miranda Leah Hanson-Baseler's Obituary
Dr. Miranda Leah Hanson-Baseler, 41, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away at her home on May 1, 2023, after a 17-year battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her husband, Greg, parents, Marsha and Alan Hanson, and her best friend Jessica Downs. She was a loving dog-mom to two Shih Tzus, Tank and Ripley, and enjoyed building relationships and spending time with family, friends, and colleagues. She was a thoughtful and passionate young woman who served as an inspiration to many and will be remembered for her upbeat attitude and wonderful sense of humor. Miranda was also an avid sports fan with her favorites being the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns.
Miranda is survived by her spouse, Greg Baseler, parents Marsha and Alan Hanson, and brother Marshall Hanson. Greg and Miranda were married for 9 years having just celebrated their anniversary. In addition, Miranda is survived by Greg's parents (Cathy and Mark Smith; Mike and Beth Baseler), Greg's siblings (Walter and Jessica Baseler; Michael and Amanda Baseler; Patrick and Anne Baseler; Joseph Crisp; Susan Crisp; Sarah and Christopher Tully; and Jennifer and Mike Kurtz), six nephews, and 2 grandmothers (Pat Courson and Mary Roulette). She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents. Miranda is also lovingly remembered by many life-long friends and colleagues.
Miranda was a Marketing Professional working in clinical diagnostics and life sciences research. She led a global diversity inclusion Ambassador team focused on women in the corporate workplace. Miranda had a BS in Biology from Wheeling Jesuit College, a PhD in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis from West Virginia University School of Medicine, and an MBA from The Julius Maximilian’s University of Wurzburg.
Miranda began her career as a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Immunoregulation at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland. She served as a reviewer for several cancer journals, chief editor for the NCI's Fellows and Young Investigators Newsletter, and Guest Writer/Editor for numerous NCI and NIH publications. In February 2014, Miranda moved to Meso Scale Discovery as a Content Developer III. She moved to Qiagen in March 2015 as a Technical and Marketing Writer responsible for writing and reviewing literature and digital content to support the Global Market Management and Global Product Management in the Life Sciences Business Area. Miranda became a Global Market Manager for Qiagen in September 2015. She lastly moved onto The Science and Medicine group in 2022 when she took the role as the Senior Director of Marketing and Membership where she excelled at community building. Miranda had numerous publications on immune cell development and function, presented at many national oncology meetings, and was the recipient of multiple honors and awards.
The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Giuntoli and the many doctors and nurses who cared for Miranda over the past 17 years.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 11am-3pm at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Sarcoma Foundation of America http://www.curesarcoma.org
