Martin Coy's Obituary
Martin Clifford Coy, 80, died July 17, 2024 at home. A son of the late Gerald H. and Beatrice H. Coy, he was the husband of Patricia A. (Cunningham) Coy whom he married on September 3, 1976, in University Park, MD at the University Park Church of the Brethren. He was born Aug. 5, 1943, in Wadsworth, OH. Mr. Coy graduated from New Kensington, PA, High School in 1961 and received his B.S. degree from West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV in 1968. He received his master's degree in Psychology from Hood College, Frederick, MD in 1988 and continued with post-master's studies in counseling at Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD in 1992.
After working in the print and broadcast medias (in both civilian and government capacities) for over 20 years, Mr. Coy retired on disability from the U.S. Federal Civil Service in 1979. In 1980, he began a career in the counseling and education fields. He had served with various local, state, and Federal agencies and organizations in that capacity. A board-certified counselor, he also maintained a small private counseling practice in Frederick since 1990.
In addition, he served as a substitute teacher in the Frederick County Public School System (FCPSS) where he provided instruction in grades K-12 for 20 years (1980-2000). He also served as an ABE (Adult Basic Education)/GED (General Equivalency Diploma) and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Instructor with the FCPSS. Over the years, Mr. Coy had been highly active in a volunteer role at Carroll Manor Elementary School Adamstown, MD and on the 2000 Safe and Sane Committee of Brunswick High School, Brunswick, MD. He had been recognized by the FCPSS and the State Department of Education for his many hours served as a volunteer. His final retirement, with over 40 years spanning two careers, came in 2006.
A member of the Buckeystown United Methodist Church, Buckeystown, MD, he attended the United Methodist Church's Basic Lay Speaking Course held by the Frederick, MD, District of the United Methodist Church in 2008. He finished and passed the class on March 8, 2008, and was officially consecrated as a United Methodist Church Local Lay Speaker on Sun., June 8, 2008.
Mr. Coy was also a disabled Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Army from 1962-65.
He had Multiple Sclerosis since the 1960's. Interested in community affairs, Mr. Coy had been active in a number of local, state and National civic and professional associations, fraternities and organizations.
Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Christopher M. Coy, and his wife, Shannon E. Huber; one brother, Gerald H. Coy, Il, and partner, Isabel Thomas; and many other family and friends.
Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
