Spence, Majel Lois' Obituary
Majel Lois Spence (Whitaker), age 103, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, in Frederick, Maryland. Born on March 8, 1922, in Sharonville, Ohio. Her parents were Elmer John Whitaker and Matilda (Tillie) Whitaker (Bartholomew). She was the second child and had an older brother Curt Whitaker. Majel lived a long and remarkable life marked by devotion to family and a deep well of friendships and experiences.
Raised in the Presbyterian church, Majel carried with her the values of faith and community throughout her life. In her early years, she worked at The Cincinnati Enquirer, where she met her beloved husband, Charles “Charlie” Ferman Spence. Their meeting blossomed into a lifelong partnership (73 years married) filled with love and shared purpose. Together they built a home centered around family and commitment. First in Cincinnati, Ohio. Then they moved to San Francisco, CA, Garden City, NY and settled in Kensington, MD in the early 60’s.
Majel embraced her role as a full-time wife and mother with unwavering dedication. She was the proud mother of four children: Sherry Lea, Linda Lea, Charles James, and Craig Jon. Though Linda preceded her in death, Majel’s love for all her children remained steadfast throughout her life.
Her legacy continues through generations as a cherished grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of six. Known and loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, Majel cultivated many enduring friendships over the years. Her warmth and presence left an indelible mark on those around her.
Majel’s life was rich with adventure and connection. From traveling to the Isle of Capri, Italy to Manila, Philippines. Whether through quiet moments at home or shared laughter with friends, she brought joy to countless lives across more than a century.
She is survived by her daughter Sherry Lee; sons Charles James and Craig Jon; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren - who carry forward her memory.
May the memory of Majel Lois Spence bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. A private service with family is planned.
