Loretta Lee Roberts' Obituary
Loretta Lee Roberts (Shankle), 84, of Frederick, MD, went home to be with the Lord on February 24th, 2025.
Loretta was born in Washington DC to Earle and Mildred Shankle. During her teenage years, Loretta’s family moved to Wheaton, MD. Loretta was a member of the second graduating class from Wheaton High School. In her younger days, Loretta enjoyed jump rope, singing, dancing, and was a participant in local beauty contests.
After graduating high school, Loretta married Donald Roberts and had two children; Kimberly Roberts and Larry Roberts.
Early in Loretta’s career, she worked as an administrative assistant at Geico and State Farm. During Kim and Larry’s school years, Loretta worked in the cafeteria for Montgomery County Schools. The majority of her career thereafter, was spent at NIH as an administrative assistant and timekeeping clerk.
Loretta retired from NIH in the early 2000s and moved to her house on the Chesapeake Bay in St Leonard, MD. Loretta eventually moved back to Frederick, MD, to be closer to her family. No matter how much she loved Frederick, Loretta always missed the Bay.
Loretta loved to swim at the YMCA. She also enjoyed gardening and cross-stitch/needlepoint. Loretta was an avid reader and especially loved history novels. The only thing Loretta loved more than a good book, was a great conversation. She definitely mastered the art of conversation.
Loretta loved her family and time spent with them enjoying a meal and playing games. Family vacations to the Outer Banks were especially cherished.
Loretta loved animals. She had many pets over the years, including her Saint Bernard, who had a litter of puppies that Loretta raised. Loretta also had several Dachshunds and Yellow Tabby cats.
Loretta was predeceased by her parents Earle and Mildred Shankle, and her daughter Kimberly Roberts. She is survived by her sister Sandra Williams and her family, and her son Larry Roberts and his wife Heather Roberts and his son Alex Roberts, and many other cousins and extended family members.
Services will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home on Friday, March 14: Visitation 10am-11am, followed by the service from 11am-12pm. Donations can be made in Loretta’s honor to ASPCA.
