Her brothers, the late Paul Spahn and Carl Spahn, also lived in St. Louis. She graduated from Catholic High School in St. Louis and soon after enlisted in the Air Force where she served as a weather observer. Her assignments included a 1 year station in Europe and her last post at Bolling Air Force Base near Washington, DC, where she met her husband Arthur R. Kneer (predeceased 2003) who was also serving in the Air Force. Lois and Art were married on February 23, 1957 and spent 46 active years together. They raised three sons while residing in Oxon Hill, MD, Thurmont, MD, Frederick, MD, and eventually retiring to Easton, MD. She volunteered and taught aerobic dancing with the Frederick County YMCA and then independently choreographed and taught her own courses for many years in Thurmont, MD. She ran regularly with friends in Thurmont, the Frederick Steeple Chasers, and also competed in half and full marathon races, most notably the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC. Fulfilling her desire to learn more about Human Anatomy, she received an Associate Degree in Kinesiology from Frederick Community College. During a long retirement with her husband, they made several long distance and cross country camping trips and toured many of the National Parks in the West. They also enjoyed square dancing and playing golf together with friends in Maryland and Florida. Independently, she enjoyed making stained glass art and sewing. In addition to her own square dance outfits, she'll be remembered for making beautiful heirloom quilts for her sons and grandchildren as they were married. She also loved spending time with her family and friends and in recent years played cards, bingo, and Mahjong with friends at Homewood. She'll be interred next to her late Husband at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick, MD.
