Obituary
Mr. Lee C. Toms, 89, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away peacefully at NMS Healthcare in Hagerstown on March 5, 2015. He was the loving husband of Idabelle Toms, his wife of 64 years.Born Sept. 13, 1925 in Smithsburg in Washington County, MD, he was the son of the late Glenn E. and Maude E. Toms. Mr. Toms retired in 1986 after nearly 40 years with the old "Decon Crew" at Ft. Detrick, then continued to work part time at the North End Barber Shop until 2004, after 52 years working there. He was a member of the Brook Hill United Methodist Church in Yellow Springs, and was also a Charter Member, Life Member, and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow at the Yellow Springs Lions Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 168 in Thurmont and the USS LCI-L National Association, Inc., having served in the U.S. Navy 1943-1946. He was stationed aboard the USS Bainbridge as part of the amphibious force in the invasion of Okinawa, and later, in minesweeping operations near Japan. He was also an original member of the Camp Detrick Flying Club, formed in 1949.In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Toms is survived by his son, Jeffrey Toms & wife Kelly of Morehead City, NC; his daughter, Debra Toms of Germantown; his grandson, Shane Toms of Raleigh, NC; six siblings, Caroline (Toms) Grove & husband Warren "Bud" of Cascade, Gene E. Toms & wife Nancy of Thurmont, Ray Toms & wife Betty of Sabillasville, Richard Toms & wife Sharon of Westminster, Arlene (Toms) Helm & husband Jack of Littlestown, PA, and Glenn E. Toms, Jr. & wife Patty of Emmitsburg; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Berlene P. Toms.Visitation will take place from 10 - 11 AM on Tuesday, March 10th at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N in Frederick, where a funeral service will begin at 11 AM on Tuesday. Interment with military honors will follow in the Garden of the Christus at Resthaven; Pastor Tim May will officiate.
