LCDR Charles Crothers Finley, USN, Ret., passed into the arms of our Lord and Savior on May 2, 2017. He was the loving husband of Patricia L. Finley, his wife of 46 A½ years. Born in Springfield, OH, Charles was the son of the late LCDR Robert and Portia Finley. Charles was active in JROTC during high school, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1960. He rose through the ranks, earning his rate as a Petty Officer, then became a Warrant Officer, and eventually a Commissioned Naval Officer. He served aboard several vessels, including the Aircraft Carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CVA-67), served on river vessels in Vietnam, was stationed in London for two tours, and also served at Camp David as the White House Communications Officer during the Reagan Administration. He retired from the Navy in 1987 after 27 A½ years of service. After the Navy, Mr. Finley worked at AT&T for eleven years and at TRW for another four years before illness forced his retirement. In addition to his loving and devoted wife, Mr. Finley is survived by two children, Deborah Lee Venn and husband, David Thomas Venn, of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, UK, and John Michael Finley and wife Karen of Frederick, MD; grandchildren, Michael Venn, Amy Venn, Matthew Finley, and Luke Finley; brothers-in-law, John Linthicum and wife, Jane, C. Arthur Linthicum, C. Robert Linthicum and wife, Sandra; sister-in-law, Sue Ann Smith; special nephew Timothy Smith, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other relatives. The Finley family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Edenton Assisted Living and to all the other doctors, nurses and technicians for the loving care they provided Mr. and Mrs. Finley during Mr. Finley's illness. Visitation will take place from 1:00 - 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 10th at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N in Frederick, where a funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM. Interment with Naval honors will take place in the Veterans Garden of Honor II at Resthaven.
