Julia "Judy" Marie Hanes' Obituary
Julia “Judy” Marie (Myers) Hanes, 84, a beloved resident of Walkersville-then-Jefferson-then-Frederick, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2024, after nearly two years in memory care at Spring Arbor of Frederick.
She was born on March 7, 1940, to the late Robert Myers and Julia (Stup) Myers.
Julia graduated from Brunswick High School in 1958 and it was at a joint Brunswick/Boonsboro High School dance where she met her husband, Gerald Lee “Champ” Hanes, Sr. who she married on Christmas Eve in Petersville, MD. Julia is reunited with Champ, who proceeded her in death in 2002.
Known for her grace, wit and fashion, Julia had a fierce love for family (brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, alike) and a devotion to friends like no other. Additionally, Julia knew nothing other than a strong work ethic and was a dedicated federal employee from the age of 18 – the FBI to Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA) to Fort Detrick – where she retired as a Senior Budget Analyst for USAMMA.
Julia enjoyed impeccable home decorating (for every season), meticulous gardening and world travel, as well, she later could be found on any golf course or pickleball court in Frederick.
Julia is survived by one of six wonderful siblings, Dorothy (Dot) Hoff (husband, Sonny) and her loving children: son, Gerald Lee “Jerry” Hanes, Jr. (wife, Karen), and daughter, Cheryl Hanes; as well as her five grandchildren: Derek Hanes (wife, Laura), Jenae (Hanes) Vazquez (husband, Tony), Kyle Hanes, Caroline Fauquier (husband, Patrick) and Victoria Ferguson (husband, Brady); and her five great-grandchildren: Jenna, Anna, Troy, Ronan and Beau.
To honor her memory, a visitation open to friends and family to celebrate Julia’s life will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 11:00AM to 12:00PM at Resthaven Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. The interment will follow immediately and will be private, allowing her (extended) family a moment of quiet reflection.
It was Julia’s request, years ago, that all those attending “avoid wearing black, if you can”.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Julia’s honor to: Spring Arbor of Frederick – Activities for Residents & Staff. May she rest in eternal peace.
