Obituary
Joseph Ronald Schmid, 83, of Jefferson, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his bedside on Monday, May 23rd. He was the beloved husband of Anne Catherine Schmid for 61 years. Born December 8, 1932 to the late Joseph and Ottella Schmid, Joe, as he liked to be called, enrolled in the ROTC program at Stevens University and graduated in 1954 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he joined GE in Schenectady, NY. While working for GE, he was called into service as Second Lieutenant and was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD. While in the Air Force, Joe achieved the rank of Captain and upon leaving, returned back to work at GE. He continued his education while working full time and raising five children. He earned his Master's Degree and PHD in Aeronautical Engineering, both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1968, Joe and his wife Anne moved his family of five children to Potomac, Maryland where they lived for 37 years. Joe continued his work as a software engineer in the GEISCO division of GE and also managed a group of other software engineers for the remainder of his 32 year career with GE. Upon retirement, Joe taught mathematics at Montgomery College and volunteered teaching essential math skills to inmates at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Rockville Md. After teaching, Joe and his wife Anne embraced a hobby they had dabbled in, woodworking. They made toys for their many grandchildren and great grandchildren and also made beautiful custom furniture. In addition to his wife Joe is survived by his five children; Joseph Schmid, Katherine Commisso (Lawrence), Margaret Hellmuth (George), Anne Fernandez (Jose) and Peter Schmid (Erika), 14 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a niece Susanne Takesian (Thomas), two grand-nephews and three great grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, David Joseph. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 1st from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm at Holy Family Catholic Community, 7321 Burkittsville Road, Middletown, Maryland where a funeral mass will begin at 1 pm with Father Robert J. Jaskot officiating. A reception will follow the service. Entombment with military honors will begin at 330 pm at the Historical Chapel Mausoleum at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Orthotic's and Prosthetic's Department of Shriner's Children's Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield MA 01104 in memory of Joseph Schmid and the O&P Program.
