Obituary for John E. Gearhart Renaissance man, visionary and true gentleman, John E. Gearhart, departed this world for Heaven on Sunday, September 4, 2016 @ 7:08 AM. John was born February 19, 1937 in York, PA, the son of the late J. Edward and Florence R. (Markle) Gearhart. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce E. (Stough) Gearhart; daughter, Denise A. (Gearhart) Wolf and husband D. Shawn Wolf of Myersville, MD; son, Eric Jon Gearhart and wife Kim of Mt. Wolf, PA; 11 grandchildren and their spouses - Ryan and Annalise Wolf, Paul and Lauren (Wolf) Futch, Connor Wolf, Alexander, Kennedy, Pierce, Garyn and Delaney Gearhart, and Sarah, Justin and Lauren Williamson. He played the clarinet in the high school band, was on various community basketball and baseball teams, worked at his father's store, Lincoln Grocery, and Fischer's Meat Market. He graduated from William Penn High School in 1955. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps Reserves. John was the former campaign chairman of Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) fundraising campaign, past member of the York Chamber of Commerce, and member of the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau, Lancaster, PA. A past member of the York Alliance Church, York, PA, John served for a number of years as Sunday school teacher, board member and board president and played on the church softball and basketball teams. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of York, in PA. He loved playing Monopoly (aka "The Monopoly King"), Scrabble, Dominos, basketball and softball with his children and grandchildren. He was the former owner of the old York County Prison, with various plans for the building, including a Monopoly themed hotel, restaurant and water park. John was co-founder, vice president and treasurer of Imperial Remodeling Contractors, Inc. for 32 years. He renovated the first house for the "Back to City Project" in the city of York, PA. John was a long-time board member of the Christian School of York for 16 years, serving as treasurer and vice president, the last three years as president. He served on the board of Chapel Pointe Retirement Center, Carlisle, PA for 14 years, the last three years as president. John was president and co-owner of S.U.E. Inc. - Strasburg Country Store & Creamery and Strasburg Village Inn, Strasburg, PA for 20 years and president of WideWorld.Net, Lancaster, PA for 10 years. Celebration of Life service will be held at the York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York, PA 17403, on Saturday, September 10, 2016 @ 2:30 PM. Family greeting time will begin at 1:30 PM - family will arrive at 1:35 PM, in keeping with true Gearhart tradition... talk amongst yourselves.
