John Dewees, 84, of Thurmont, MD, died suddenly in a car accident on June 23, 2016. He was born August 8, 1931 in Thurmont and was the son of the late Hazel and Maurice Dewees and the late Mary and Harry Hewitt who were his grandparents. John was employed at Ft. Detrick for 37 years as a steam fitter until his retirement. He was an Army veteran serving in the Korean War stationed in Baumholder, Germany where he met the love of his life, "his angel", Johanna. He served with the Color Guard with the American Legion Post 168. His love of softball kept him playing until he was 80 years young and he could always be seen driving around looking for deer. John was known by all as a caring, hardworking and dedicated husband, father and grandfather and wonderful man. John is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Johanna; five children, Heide Daugherty and husband Terry, Susan Gills and husband Steve, Sandy Eyler and husband Bill, Greg Dewees and wife Susie, and Martha Rippeon and husband Daryll; 14 grandchildren, John Spahr, Jeremy Gills, Trisha Victor, Daniel Gills, Chad Dewees, Brad Eyler, Joel Gills, Branndi Dewees, Ashton Monacelli, James Sanger, Eric Daugherty, Terry Daugherty, Kylle May and Sarah May; 24 great-grandchildren; and his siblings Marie Eyler, Robert Dewees and wfe Betty Ann, Shirley Ridenour, Richard Dewees and wife Judy, and Harvey Dewees and wife Mary, Tom Dewees and wife Linda; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandchildren, Rebekah Gills and Jackson Rippeon; his four brothers, Merle, Pete, Irvin, and Billy; two brothers-in-law, Eddie and Cutter; and sister-in-law, Pearl. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E Main Street, Thurmont with Cathy Rippeon officiating. Final resting place will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2016 at the funeral home in Thurmont.
