Mr. John Harold Charity, Sr., 87 of Frederick, MD passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Alice Selden Charity, his devoted wife of 63 years.Born on September 20, 1928 in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late John L. and Alice Hill Charity. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean war veteran. John earned a B.S. in History from Virginia State University, and an M.A in History from New York University. A life-long educator, he taught for 28 years beginning in Baltimore County schools, and continued in Frederick at Lincoln H.S., Frederick H.S., and Governor Thomas Johnson H.S. John later worked as the CETA program administrator for the Frederick County Board of Education for 5 years. He retired in 1981. John enjoyed all types of music, but especially jazz, and was an accomplished trumpet player. He loved to cook and enjoyed preparing gourmet meals for his family. John was also an avid reader, and loved to travel especially to the Caribbean. Surviving, in addition to his devoted wife are two daughters: Sandra C. Lawson of Richmond, VA and Lisa Charity-Jones of Marriottsville, MD; two sons-in-law, Nelson Lawson and Kevin Jones, four grandchildren: Nelson Lawson, Jr., Brian Lawson, Elliott Jones, and Allison Jones, along with a host of family and friends. Mr. Charity was preceded in death by a son, John Harold Charity, Jr., and a brother Lawrence L. Charity. The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Saturday, July 2, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 101 W. All Saints St., Frederick, MD 21701. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM.Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick, MD.In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Virginia State University, Ettrick, Virginia 23806.
