Mr. James Nugent Maleady's Obituary
James Nugent Maleady, 87, of Lake Linganore, MD passed away on April 7, 2023 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Frederick. He was the loving husband of Helen Maleady.
Born January 13, 1936 in Queens New York City, Jim was the son of the late James Patrick, Jr. and Mary Nugent Maleady. He graduated from St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., Class of 1954, and enlisted in the Washington D.C. Air National Guard. He was eventually promoted to Staff Sergeant and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis of 1961. Jim received his bachelor’s degree from Catholic University and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Architecture and have a distinguished career, achieving the status of AIA Emeritus from the American Institute of Architects. He was a partner with the engineering firm Dewberry, Nealon and Davis; a project architect for Luigi Moretti & Fischer Elmore and led his own 30 person architectural firm. His many projects included the Watergate Hotel, WCUA Radio Station, Mother Seton Parish in Germantown & the Gaithersburg Hebrew Congregation Temple in Montgomery Village. Jim was active in charity work, raising funds for Partner With Youth, a YMCA program providing opportunities for disadvantaged youth, and designing several MPDUs and homeless shelters. Jim also loved sailing and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his loving wife, Helen, Jim is survived by two daughters, Mary Helen Dolan & husband Paul, and Catherine Ulander & husband Craig; seven grandchildren, Madeleine, Deirdre, Bridget, and Thomas Dolan, and Alisha, Matthew & wife Annie and Brian & wife Lauren Ulander; two great-grandchildren, Levi and Robbie Ulander; a niece, a nephew, and other relatives and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his brother Thomas.
A celebration of life will take place April 27, 2023 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at the Resthaven Funeral Home & Community Center (which Jim designed). His remains will ultimately be placed at one of his favorite sailing spots. Please do not send flowers. Donations in Jim's memory may be made to Friends of the National Zoo (nationalzoo.si.edu).
