James Francis Hopfer, Sr., of New Market, Maryland passed away on Monday, March 21st. He was the loving husband of Dorothy "Viola" Hopfer for 53 years. He was born on December 9, 1940 in Evansburg, Pennsylvania to the late Raymond and Laura Hoffman-Hopfer. James was a wonderful and devoted husband and father who lived to fish, hunt and camp in his free time. He loved to play guitar and dance with his loving wife to the tunes of Elvis and Johnny Cash. And was a big fan of their family reunions over the years. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children; Peggy Davis and significant other Billy Routzahn, Cheryl Black and husband Kevin, Jim Hopfer, Jr. and wife Erin, Beverly Murtagh and husband Tim, and Joe and Tara Hopfer. 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Siblings; Rita Holohan and husband Steve, Barbara Hopfer, Joann Erskine, Judy Downs, Arlene Wheeler and husband Dean, Ray Hopfer, Dan Hopfer, Dorothy Hopfer, and Steve Hopfer. He was preceded in death by his granddaugter; Cassie Hopfer. A visitation will take place on Thursday, March 24th from 11 am-1 pm at the Resthaven Historical Chapel, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick where a funeral will begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memory I at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Contributions can be made to Holy Cross Hospice, 11800 Tech Rd # 240, Silver Spring, MD 20904.
