Jim played basketball and the trumpet in high school, then continued his education at Middle Tennessee State University, graduating with a degree in mathematics. Jim started his career as a computer programmer at Arnold Air Force Center in Tullahoma, TN. He next went to work for General Electric at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL, where German post war rocket scientists were working. This later became NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and was the primary site for space launch vehicle design into the 1960s. His assignments at GE also took him to Florida briefly, where he worked on the Saturn Rocket programs at Cape Canaveral. Eventually James and Betty moved to Gaithersburg, MD to advance his career. Through acquisitions and changes in the industry, James ended his career at Honeywell Inc., retiring as a senior VP.
