James Talmadge Broom, age 83, of Mt. Pleasant, MD, went to be with his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, August 19, 2016, at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, in Washington, DC. He was the loving husband of Genevieve Ensley Broom, whom he married June 25, 1953. Born March 29, 1933 in Jackson County, NC, he was the son of the late Lewy Howard Broom and Mattie Ammons Broom. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. During his time of service he was stationed at Enewetak Atoll, where he participated in the first H-bomb test. After his honorable discharge from the Army he continued his career in the construction field with F. O. Day Company, where he developed his expertise operating many types of heavy equipment. One of his most notable contributions was his involvement with the construction of I-270 Interstate highway. He retired as Superintendent for Corman Construction. He was a faithful Christian, being a member of Ballenger Creek Baptist Church, and shared his belief and love for God with everyone. He loved spending time with his family and listening to bluegrass music. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Phyllis Thompson (Edward) and Sharon Mowdy (Wayne), all of Walkersville, MD, Tim Broom (Jan) of Fulton, TX, Joyce Worster (Rick) of Palmetto, FL, Lori Tanyel (Cem) of Duluth, GA, and Brian Broom (Larissa) of Mills River, NC; grandchildren, Tara Miller (Tommy) of Littlestown, PA, Kimberly Miller and Jenna Nikirk, both of Frederick, MD, Michael Broom of Fulton, NC, Jordan Broom of Chicago, IL, Elise and Berk Tanyel, both of Duluth, GA, Blair Broom of Charlotte, NC and Payton Broom of Mills River, NC; great-grandchildren, Brennen Miller of Littlestown, PA, and Isabella and Christian Miller, both of Frederick, MD; step-grandchildren, Julie McGhee (Marty) of Keymar, MD, Pebble Gladhill (Bobby) of Charlestown, WVA, Wayne Mowdy Jr. of Dover, DE and Nicole Santillo of Frederick, MD; step-great grandchildren, Dakota and Carly McGhee, Nicole and Brianna Gladhill, Monica Noguerra; step-great great grandchildren, Sophia Gladhill and Aleyah Morgan; brother, Hase Broom (Opal) of Six Mile, SC; four sisters, Sue Stewart (Mildford) of Six Mile, SC, Frances Parris (Gene) of Boiling Springs, SC, Bonnie Gibson (Ronnie) of Hagerstown, MD and Linda Broom of Frederick, MD; his wife's identical twin sister, Ester Lee Broom of Big Ridge, NC; and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack Carroll Broom and Timothy Alan Broom; and sister, Martha Lou Gross. The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Rd., Libertytown on Monday, Aug 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. Rev. John Sharff, his pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ballenger Creek Baptist Church, 4720 Buckeystown PIke, Frederick, MD 21704.
