Obituary
J. Burton "Burt" Elkins, 80, of Middletown, passed away very peacefully on Sept. 27, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Sheckells Elkins; they were together for 58 years. Burt was born to Gladys and John Elkins, Sr. near Hume, VA on April 11, 1934. The family moved to Walkersville, MD. After graduating from Walkersville High in 1952, Burt worked for several years at Sears, Roebuck & Co. before marriage to Mary Sheckells in 1956, and almost immediately after marriage, was drafted into the U.S. Army. In the Army, he learned to repair radios and completed his tour of active duty in Germany. After his tour of duty, he returned to Sears from which he retired after 44 years of service. Burt enjoyed the Sears Retiree "gang" at lunches held twice a year. Burt in his earlier years enjoyed baseball, basketball, camping & cruising with family & friends, golfing, and was a true follower of the Baltimore Orioles. His true passion was his family and his precious grandchildren. Surviving Burt are his wife, Mary; two sons, Robert and wife Libby of Smithsburg, Jeffrey Elkins at home; two grandchildren, Samuel (Sam) Elkins and Madeline (Maddy) Elkins, both attending college; sister, Barbara Elkins Eader and husband Bob; sister-in-law, Maria Elkins & family. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Janet Sheckells Mulvey & husband Sean, NancySheckells Rasberry & husband Mike. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as by two great-nephews, Ki Elkins and Tanner Summers, and a great-niece, Karsyn Barrick. Preceding Burt in death are his parents, Gladys & John Elkins, Sr., one sister, Annette Elkins Friel, and one brother, John Elkins, Jr. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 30th from 4 - 6 PM at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick (entrance on 2nd St., elevator available at circle). Viewing will also take place on Wednesday, Oct. 1st from 10 - 11 AM. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM on Wednesday. A funeral procession to Resthaven Memorial Gardens will immediately follow the service. Pallbearers will be Eric Poole (nephew), Mike Rasberry (brother-in-law), Chad Barrick, Cleon Stull, Ronnie Dunn, and Rick Blickenstaff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to 2C In-Patient Hospice Unit at Frederic Memorial Hospital, 400 West 7th Street, Frederick, MD 21701and/or to the Frederick Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.
