Howard was truly a kind hearted, industrious person & he will be missed.I always looked up to Howard as a roll model and a bit of a father figure. He has always indulged my curiosity since I was very young and he would let me help him build things before I could really even hold a hammer. But it was only when I really got to work with him on the farm and in his shop that I really got to appreciate what a kind and interesting person he really was. He has been a roll model to me both in his ability to see the good in people & his dedication to hard work.Howard has been a huge part of my childhood growing up & continues to have a profound effect on who I am. -Gavin Hawkins
Howard Payne (better known as Uncle Howard to me) will truly be missed by everyone that knew him. Growing up I learned of legendary Payne family stories that included my dad, Howard and their three sisters. The most memorable stories included a brotherly fight over a quarter(at that time was enough for a movie), a camping trip in which all of the camping material lay sprawled over the highway, and the time George just happened to get tied to a tree... later helped by a neighbor walking by. When I moved home from Denver I was unemployed and unsure of a plan for my life. Uncle Howard offered me a job while I figured things out. That was who he was. That time spent with him solidified everything that I already knew about him. He was a dedicated hard worker who was able to converse with anyone(usually for more than a few minutes and probably talking with his hands.) He loved music and singing, so much so that he performed Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville” at my cousin’s wedding. Howard was notorious for telling a series of jokes-ones that you may or may not have been prepared for. But most importantly, he had an infectious personality that made a lasting impression on everyone that he interacted with. We will miss you❤️
I am sending my deepest condolences to Joy and the family. I first met Howard when I visited my brother Gary in Frederick, MD around 25 years ago. We went and looked at Howard's sawmill and compared it with my sawmill. Later, Howard, Gary, and a friend fly flew his plane to a private airport near my home in Fairview, WV. They had dinner with my family and I. This visit gave us an opportunity to check out the operation of my sawmill. After we enjoyed many conversations that afternoon, we all traveled back to the private airport. Howard then graciously invited my wife and I for an airplane ride to view our farm from above. We will forever be thankful for this amazing experience! Most importantly, we will always cherish friendship we shared with Howard!
It saddens us to hear of Howard's passing. It was a privilege and honor to know him and spend time with him. He was caring, funny, and very diverse in his talents and Interests. Howard was a lovely man and Sean and I were privileged to have gotten to know him. It was always fun watching how much enjoyment Howard got out of watching my horse perform tricks for him.
Joy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Howard meant a lot to our family as well, and we feel so fortunate that we came to know him. We're keeping you all in our prayers!
We are so going to miss Mr. Payne at Airways Inn. He was such a very soft spoken man that loved talking about flying. It was a surprise to read about him today. The good Lord takes the Best first. Prayers for the family.

As a member of the Rotary Club of Frederick, I have been blessed by his music. He often shared it freely from his keyboard as we gathered at Dutch's Daughter. I feel so fortunate to have known Howard for 14 years, and share his life, dreams and vision. He was the most courageous man I ever met, kind and loving toward all. He touched the hearts of many people, evident in the stories they inevitably shared with me. He was a powerful life force that drew us to him, and created a strong desire to be with him. I feel privileged to have partnered with him on so many levels, knowing Howard made me a better person. I will miss his wit, his energy, his vision, but will always feel his love.
