Herman Douglas Nelson's Obituary
Herman Douglas Nelson, age 90, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on November 24, 2025. He was born on December 4, 1934, in Berkeley Springs, WV.
Herman proudly served in the United States Army for over 23 years, achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major. His dedication to his country was matched only by his devotion to his family. He was a good man, always thinking of his loved ones and showing his care through thoughtful gestures like offering two-dollar bills to his grandchildren and other sweet, considerate acts that will be fondly remembered. He was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and lived his life guided by faith, service, and love for family.
Herman is survived by his daughters Brenda Toms and husband Steven and Teresa Gallahan and husband Jim, along with his cherished grandchildren James Gallahan and wife Catherine and Joseph Gallahan and wife Scarlett. He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Margie Nelson and his beloved wife Bernice Nelson. Herman is also survived by his sisters Ida Swartz, Margie Snyder and Corj Simmons.
The Celebration of Life Services will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, which would have been his 91st birthday, at Resthaven Funeral Home, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick, MD 21701. The visitation will take place from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the Catoctin Chapel at Resthaven, with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 PM. Immediately following the funeral service, a graveside service will be held in Resthaven Memorial Gardens. All are invited to a reception in the Monocacy Room at Resthaven from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
The family warmly invites all who knew and loved Herman to join in honoring his life and legacy on this special day.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Montgomery County Hospice in his honor.
