Geraldine Claire Cavanaugh's Obituary
Geraldine O’Neil Cavanaugh, 96, passed away on February 22, 2024, at Bedford Court Assisted Living in Silver Spring, MD. Her beloved husband of more than 68 years, Jack, was with her.
Geraldine (Gerry) was born November 14, 1927 in North Adams, MA to Edward and Claire O’Neil. She had two sisters, Mary Saldo and Thelma Dubreuil, and a brother Edward (Buddy) O’Neil, all who predeceased Gerry.
Gerry was a wonderful wife and mother, and an especially caring grandmother. She is survived by her 3 children, Claire Garner (Mark Garner), Jean Cavanaugh (Mark Pascal) and John Cavanaugh (Sally Barron). In addition she had 6 grandchildren who were her world, Kyle Garner, Sam Pascal, Shaelyn Cavanaugh, Bridget Cavanaugh, Joe Pascal and Leah Cavanaugh. Gerry is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Gerry became a registered nurse following World War II, and practiced in Manhattan, NY at various hospitals including St. Luke’s (Mt. Sinai) and New York Presbyterian. She also met her husband to be John (Jack) Cavanaugh in Manhattan at the Carroll Club. They married in 1955, and lived in upstate New York and Norwalk, CT before moving to Silver Spring, MD.
Gerry volunteered at St. Camillus Elementary School, Meals on Wheels, and was an advocate for local nursing home residents. She loved to read, especially historical biographies, and was a great swimmer in her younger days.
There will be a private service on February 27 for family. Donations can be made in her memory to your local Meals on Wheels.
