Gene Amis Drake's Obituary
Gene Amis Drake of Burkittsville, Maryland, was born on December 17, 1941, in Springfield, Missouri to John Isaac and Winona Drake. He passed on June 17, 2025 in his home surrounded by his family.
Gene was a graduate of Ash Grove High School in 1959. After graduation he left the family farm to serve for four years in the U.S. Navy. Once he left the Navy he then went on to attend college to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
Gene held a variety of jobs throughout his life. The ones that he would be most proud of was being the manager of Southern States in Woodbine, Maryland in the mid 1970’s. He was also a State of Maryland meat inspector in the 80’s and 90’s. Lastly, he sold farm equipment for HB Duval until his final retirement.
Gene had plenty of hobbies in life, including spending time on the farm, making hay on the farm with his son and grandsons, raising paint horses and showing them up and down the east coast, going to auctions with his son and grandsons, attending antique tractor pulls, going to craft shows with his wife, and watching the Washington Commanders on Sundays. He was also a supportive grandfather, attending the sporting events of his grandsons.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Sue Drake, in 2002. He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Bailey Drake, and his sister, Phyllis Todd.
Gene leaves to cherish his memory: son, John A. Drake (JAD); grandsons Mason and Kanin Drake; a special friend Danielle Roberts; brother-in-law Charles Todd; niece Wanita Todd Duncan (Eric); nephew Robert Todd (Heather); and a host of friends who loved him.
Following Gene’s wishes there will be no service held. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations be made to the Bailey Drake scholarship fund in Gene’s honor. For additional information on this scholarship please contact John A. Drake (JAD).
