Esther "Teri" Shaw Smith,'s Obituary
Obituary
Esther "Teri" Shaw Smith, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 4 at her apartment in Country Meadows Assisted living, in Frederick, MD. She had been married for 63 years to Robert (Bob) Smith, who passed away in March 2016. Teri was born on December 19, 1924, in Yonkers, NY. She was a devoted wife and loving mother to her three sons and adored her four grandchildren. Teri entered Hunter College at the age of 16 and graduated with a degree in accounting. Her passion for theater, however, led her to California where she studied media communications at USC while teaching part time at UCLA. She returned to New York to care for her mother during an extended illness, when her brothers were both enlisted in the armed forces during WWII. It was in New York where Teri met the love of her life, Bob Smith, at the All Souls Unitarian Church. Teri and Bob moved to Baltimore County, MD where they raised their three sons, Kenneth, Roger and Steven. She returned to work at the headquarters for the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, where for over 25 years she was a writer and editor for their national employee publications. Teri always had a passion for exercise and adventure, whether it was riding her bike across the George Washington Bridge from New York to New Jersey, or beating the manager in a bowling competition at Unitas Lanes! She had a love for tennis and playing bridge. She and Bob were avid fans of the Baltimore theater scene, dedicated square dancers for over 30 years, and active and faithful members of the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore for fifty years. Teri was predeceased by her parents, Drs. Adele and Samuel Shaw, and her brothers, Drs. Edward and Herbert Shaw. She is survived by her three loving sons, Dr. Kenneth J. Smith and wife Betzie of Salisbury, MD, Dr. Roger A. Smith and wife Carole of Frederick, MD, Steven C. Smith, CPA and his wife Athanasia of Columbia, MD and four grandchildren, Kyle Smith, Kevin Smith, Alex Smith and Addison Smith. A visitation will take place on Friday, November 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Resthaven Historical Chapel, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway, Frederick. A celebration of Teri's life will be held on Saturday, November 18, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, 4880 Elmer Derr Rd., Frederick.
