Mrs. Esther Laverne Mathewson's Obituary
Esther Laverne Mathewson, 100, formerly of West Beecher Hill Road in Owego, NY, passed away on Sunday morning, January 26, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Walkersville, MD. She was the widow of Kenneth L. Mathewson in 1990.
Esther was born in North Dakota on November 21, 1924, the daughter, the daughter of Ernest and Frances Landon. She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hattie and Orval Bragg and Edna and Alfred Thiede; her son-in-law, Samuel H. Jackson; and her nephew, Ronald Thiede, who was a casualty of the Vietnam War.
Esther is survived by her beloved daughter, Judith Nadene Jackson; also her three nephews, Daryl W. Bragg of Grand Forks, ND, Gary Thiede of Tucson, AZ, Kenneth and Donna Thiede of Bismarck, ND; along with numerous Leeson cousins of Ardoch, ND and Houston, TX.
In 2020, she left her Owego home of 65 years, along with her precious cat, Moppy, to live with her daughter in Walkersville, MD. She retired from the Fairbanks Valve Company in Binghamton, NY where she was the secretary to the company’s President for 25 years. Esther was a dedicated member of the McKendree Methodist Church in Candor, NY and was a Devotional Leader of the United Methodist Women of Faith for many years. She played piano and organ and served many small country churches, directed youth choirs and taught Sunday school as well. Esther simply loved the church. She had a lot of friends and loved every one of them too.
