Obituary
Mr. Erik Christian Snesrud, 44, of Point of Rocks, MD, passed away on February 10, 2020 at Frederick Health Hospital. He was the husband of Ava Louise Snesrud, his wife of 15 years.
Born in New Hartford, NY, Erik was the son of Wayne R. and Catherine L. Snesrud of Hagerstown, MD.
Erik was a highly respected and accomplished Research Scientist who started his career at the Institute for Genomic Research. It continued at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research where he pioneered efforts to prevent the spread of drug resistant bacteria among our U.S. service members and their families. His qualities, both human and scientific, and his sense of humor, determination, and expert overview and mastery of his chosen field of work was unlike any other. Erik was a beloved colleague and a fantastic mentor to aspiring scientists, instilling in them his deep love of science.
Erik was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed Formula One racing, auto mechanics, and astronomy. He was admired by so many and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
In addition to his loving wife and his parents, Erik is survived by three children, Sam, Evey, and Reuben; his sister, Hilary Snesrud; brothers, Matthew Mason-Snesrud and John Mason-Snesrud; his father- and mother-in-law, Dennis and Ann Fox; sister-in-law, Denise Hurley; brother-in-law, Yancy Fox; many other relatives, and friends in the scientific community and throughout the country.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 18th from 7 – 9 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Hwy. in Frederick. Funeral services will begin at 2 PM on Wednesday, February 19th at Mt. Moriah Evangelical Lutheran Church, 15116 Foxville Church Rd, Sabillasville, MD 21780. Pastor Julie Brigham will be officiating the ceremony. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Erik’s altruistic life. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to a GoFundMe that has been established for the future educational expenses for Erik and Ava’s children.
