SSGT Dewey Leon Underwood, USA, Retired, 75 of Frederick, MD passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017 surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Barbara M. Underwood, his wife of 54 years. Born on December 31, 1941 in Jasper, AL, the foster son of the late Robert Putman and the late Helen Lunn. He was a retired Army veteran having served in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry. He served for 7 years and on June 18, 1966, with 10 days remaining on his tour in Vietnam, a land mine exploded causing him multiple life threatening injuries and blindness. He spent over a year recovering from his injuries and rehabilitating in Walter Reed Hospital and Chicago, IL. After recovery he attended Frederick Community College where he obtained his Associates degree. He went on to attend Hood College where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1974 and his Master of Arts degree in Psychology Counseling in 1976. Upon graduation he was self employed as a Marriage & Family Counselor. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was a life member of the BPOE 684, Amvets and VFW. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 11. In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his two daughters, Cherie Hyssong and husband, Dave, Karen Smith and husband, Kenny; eight grandchildren, Brandon Cannon, Breann Geil and husband, Jeff, Aaron Cannon and fiancAC., Stephanie Kapsch, Taylor Hyssong, Trey Smith, Colin Hyssong, Amber Underwood and Jordan Smith; and by one great-grandson Jason Lee Geil. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Doris Grossnickle and husband, Steve; and his niece and nephew Tammy and Troy. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Donna Marie; and by his beloved son, Leon H. Underwood. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the funeral home with Pastor Ed Heim officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
