Cynthia (Cindy) Jean Levering, age 72, passed away of cancer on May 9, 2023, at Kline Hospice House in Mount Airy, MD.
Born in Pittsburgh, Cindy was the daughter of Clifton C. Shafer and Wanda A. (Adamitz) Shafer. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at Thiel College in Greenville, PA and a master’s in applied mathematics from UMBC in Baltimore. While on a blind date at a Thiel College event, she met her future husband of nearly 50 years, Leonard (Len) M. Levering III.

Even in retirement, she remained active in the field, volunteering for the Society of Actuaries and American Academy of Actuaries. In 2016, she was appointed by the Secretary of Labor to the ERISA Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefit Plans to represent the actuarial consulting profession.
A lifelong lover of music, Cindy was passionate about singing. She was part of The Chancel Choir at Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore for many years, later joining The Sanctuary Choir at Frederick Presbyterian Church upon her move to Frederick in 2021. Cindy was active with the Handel Choir of Baltimore, a critically acclaimed choral ensemble, as a member and serving as President of the Board of Trustees.
Cindy was a volunteer and supporter of multiple causes such as the Community Concerts at Second, a free music series showcasing the finest local, regional, and international artists, and CASA of Baltimore County, an organization supporting child victims of abuse and neglect, where her husband worked as a Court Appointed Special Advocates volunteer representing children in Baltimore County’s child protection system.
Cindy enjoyed gardening and loved tending to her backyard garden at her prior home in Baltimore. She was a big sports fan, following the Orioles and Ravens, along with Navy football and University of Maryland basketball. Cindy also crocheted and enjoyed making special gifts for her beloved granddaughters, Cecilia and Victoria. She was a devoted and caring grandma who loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Cindy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leonard M. Levering III (2017). She is survived by her sister Donna Taylor (Thomas) of Pittsburgh; daughter Sara Roa (Vicente) and granddaughters Cecilia and Victoria of Barnesville, MD.
