Charles Lewis Holt Sr's Obituary
Charles Lewis Holt, SR., age 85, passed away peacefully in Hagerstown, Maryland on Thursday, July 6th.
Born April 14, 1938, in Frederick, Maryland, son of Leslie S. and Ethel G. (Staub) Holt. Charles lived in Lewistown and Thurmont and retired from the National Institute of Health after 30 years of service in 1995. Charles was once a volunteer/member with Lewistown Volunteer Fire Company, through which he served as a member of the Frederick County Fire Police and assisted at many of the local fireman’s carnivals in the area.
Charles is survived by his sister Betty “Snookie” Painter, his children Charles JR. (wife Linda), Allen Lee (Marilyn), Pamela Marie, Barbara Ann, Brian Keith (wife Melanie), 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, 5 brother in-laws and 1 sister in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. As well as special family friend Ruthie Rinehart.
Including his parents, Charles was preceded in death by 3 brothers, 9 sisters and the love of his life, Sarah Jane (Claggett) Holt. Charles and Sarah were married for 63 years until her death in January 2021. They were never apart very long and could always be found eating at any one of many local restaurants.
Many in Thurmont knew Charles as the “Can Man” as he could frequently be found searching for aluminum cans to recycle all around town.
All services will be held at Resthaven Memorial Gardens/ Funeral Home, located at 9501-B Catoctin Mtn. Hwy, Frederick, Maryland 21701. Visitation will be held on Monday, July 17th from 6-8 pm. Memorial services followed by interment will be on Tuesday, July 18th starting at 11am with refreshments and fellowship following.
For any who would wish to participate, in honor of our father, we will be collecting aluminum cans outside the funeral home during visitation. These will be recycled with proceeds to be donated to the Doey’s House, Hospice of Washington County.
