Obituary
Mrs. Bessie Mae Essex, 79, of Frederick, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2015 at Homewood at Crumland Farms. She was the wife of the late Thomas Essex, who passed in 1982, and formerly the wife of the late Garfield D. Rice, Sr., who passed in 1994. Born August 28, 1936 near Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles, Sr. and Nettie Clark. She graduated from Rankin High School in Pittsburgh and attended business school shortly thereafter. She retired from Allegheny Power after 30+ years as a business manager. Mrs. Essex is survived by a son, Garfield D. Rice, Jr.; grandchildren, Mike Rice, Sr., Chasity Rice, and Kierra Rice; great-grandchildren, Michael Rice, Jr. and Amajinae Bowie; two sisters, Loretta Beasley and Venetta Greenhowe; a special nephew, Frank, in Pittsburgh; and many other relatives and friends, especially her family of friends and caregivers at Homewood. In addition to each of her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael V. Rice, a sister, Barbara Clark, and a brother, Charles Clark, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 9th at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N in Frederick. Inurnment will be held privately at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Homewood Willows Unit, 7407 Willow Rd., Frederick, MD 21702.
