Dr. Allan Duane Hess' Obituary
Dr. Allan Duane Hess, 74, of New Market, passed away on February 26, 2023 at Frederick Health Hospital. He was the loving husband of Mary Ellen (Storino) Hess, his wife of 52 years.
Born July 23, 1948 in Chicago, IL Allan was the son of the late Harry and Sophia Hess. He earned his bachelor’s degree from DePaul University and his PhD from the University of Illinois and completed his post-doctorate studies at Duke University in North Carolina. Dr. Hess went on to do research on leukemia and bone marrow transplantation at Johns Hopkins University, where he retired as Professor Emeritus after 35 years of service. In retirement, Dr. Hess enjoyed driving his Corvette, playing video games on his PlayStation and Bejeweled Blitz on his phone.
In addition to his loving wife, Mary Ellen, Dr. Hess is survived by his daughter, Joellyn Bowser & husband Jerry; grandsons, Joseph and Jeffrey Bowser; sisters, Susan and Maria Hess; brother-in-law, Louis Storino (Carol Lord); nieces, Dawn Skraba (Mike) and Linda Oberlin (Tony); nephew, Dennis Jirout (April), and many friends, other relatives and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his sister, Louella Jirout.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3rd from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home & Community Center, 9501 B Catoctin Mountain Hwy. in Frederick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 4th at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, 4103 Prices Distillery Rd. in Ijamsville. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the American Heart Association.
