Mr. James William Onley, 66, of Hagerstown MD, passed away on May 8, 2022, after a brief illness. "Billy" as he was so affectionately known, was born February 4, 1956, to the late William James and Christina Onley (Young) in Point of Rocks, MD. He was a graduate of Brunswick High School in 1974 where he excelled in baseball and football. He was an avid fan of all sports whether it be football, baseball, hockey, or softball. Billy worked for the Department of Energy in the shipping and receiving department for 30 years. He enjoyed having chess matches with his son Brian, who was the love of his life. Billy's greatest accomplishment was the upbringing of his son, Brian. He was a hands-on dad, following Brian as he played lacrosse and many other sports. He always encouraged him to be his best. He had a love of family and enjoyed the times when we would get together for our annual Thanksgiving dinner. Billy leaves to cherish his memory, his son Brian Thompson, brother Kevin Onley (Judy), sisters Helen Sewell (David), Dianne Onley, and Keena Moore, brother-in-law George Brown, nieces Kelly Onley and Stacey Onley, nephew Jason Onley (Sara) and a host of grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by many special friends. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Keith J. Onley and a sister Anna M. Brown.
A visitation will be held from 11am-12pm Thursday, May 12, 2022, at Resthaven Funeral Home & Community Center, 9501 Catoctin Mtn Hwy, Frederick MD, where the funeral service will be held at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in his name.
